Well done to those who took part in the Hayle standard and Middle distance tri on Saturday.  Well done to Carol the only Lady Tri Logic and who did us proud with coming 2nd in her age group. (Their is no stopping her)

A little bit from carol  about her day.....

This was my 2nd Tri at this distance (first being last year in Hayle) so I wasn’t quite so concerned until I got down to the new venue in Marazion and it appeared that everyone there was a lot younger than me but I’d paid my £40 and was going to have a go anyway even if I came last.  The swim looked a long way (1500m) and Cris, the organiser had warned us that the swim out would seem harder due to the incoming tide, he wasn’t wrong – it was also quite lumpy and I took a few mouthfuls of water trying to spot the first and second buoys, once we were round the apex buoy the swim in was much faster and easier.  We had 5 minutes between the swim and the bike, which would be deducted from our overall time at the end of the tri, I took full advantage of this, taking off my wetsuit and putting on my socks before I ran to my bike.  I really enjoyed the 25 mile bike section and even managed to pass a few people, I think that the 10 mile time trial I did a couple of weeks ago at Leedstown really helped as I knew how far I could push my body!  My transitions were ok, I think!  The worst section for me is always the run and the start of the 10km up a steep hill didn’t help but I decided to walk up and get my breath which worked for me as I then overtook some fellow competitors who had passed me on the hill.  All in all I was pleased with my time of 2hrs 52min 43 sec, finishing 37th out of 50 competitors and 2nd in my age group (the only advantage of being an old woman!).  Although it’s a shame that the tri isn’t being held in Hayle anymore, the venue is a good one.  The swim being in the sea and the run, more hilly, are both harder, the bike section is much the same.  Well done to the Crispen for a well organised event and thank you to all of the Marshalls.  I am now considering entering the Sprint Tri in August, but will have to see how much is in the piggy bank!

A little bit from Darrin about his day.....

Kernow Fest 17th July 2010

The Cormoran

Legend has it that Cormoran was a giant chap that built St Michaels Mount for his home. He would raid local farms and villages and make off with sheep and cows to feed his enormous appetite (sounds like somebody i know). In the end though he was despatched by a local farm boy called Jack who came to be known as Jack the Giant Killer. Very imaginative.

Swim. 1.5k

Conditions were ideal for the swim. Skinners. Warm and flat.

I started to the right because I know i always veer left. It's nothing to do with differing arm strength, i have one testicle bigger than the other. Sure enough, halfway to the first buoy i spot a safety kayak immediately on my left stopping people drifting over too far. Once past the first buoy though, navigation is not such a problem because there are landmarks you can sight with and i think i swam straight-ish from there onwards. Getting out of the water I do what i always do and perhaps never should - i look behind to see how many are left in. Hardly a soul.

One thing i like about the Hayle tris down at Marazion is the 5 minute 'dead zone' after the swim. Once you exit the water and cross the swim timing mat the clock stops and you have 5 mins grace before the clock starts again or you cross the timing mat on entry into transition. This allows plenty of time to get out of the wetsuit which is great as far as i'm concerned. A drunken giraffe could escape from a straight-jacket faster and more gracefully than i can get out of a wetsuit.

The bike. 75k.

2 laps of the old Hayle standard route. Marazion bypass toward Helston, left at Hilltop garage to Hayle, at Hayle left back towards PZ, at Newtown roundabout left towards Helston again. X 2. Wind was behind on the way to Helston but in your face going out to Hayle. I had spine issues halfway into the 2nd lap which cost me a couple of minutes for which I blame Tony R. He advised me on bike set-up Only kidding Tony. I averaged 20mph over the 46 miles so i was happy with that.

The run. 20k.

What a ridiculous way to start a run. More of a wall than a hill. 2 laps of a 10k undulating course. It was getting hot at this point but i felt a lot better than when i did this course on the standard distance last month. There was an extra drink station this time which helped although i must say the water at the 3 / 6 mile mark tasted like shite, God knows what they did in that. On my second lap I was trying to catch a bloke in front of me who i thought must have been another Cormoran entry so i was desperate to catch him but although i was making ground I couldn't quite get him. It was such a relief when coming into the finishing straight he turned to do another lap. Turns out he was on his first lap of the Kernow man course and was the eventual winner. He was flying.

My run took 1hr.31min. Not as fast as i thought i was running but in hindsight not too bad.

All in all a really good race. I did it in 4hr:26. 4th overall and 1st old bastard. Just a shame there weren't a few more entries (from fat people otherwise i might not have got a prize).

Nice to see a few friendly faces from Tri-Logic over the course (except in the sea obviously, although there was a seal that looked remarkably like Max).

I know there were a couple of other Tri-Logic athletes doing the Cormelian standard distance. Well done to Carol Penberthy and Mark King. From the results it looks like Carol got 2nd in her age group.

Credit due to Cris from Hayle Tri and everybody that helped out. Thanks everybody.

On the way home i was so hungry i helped myself to a couple of heiffers and a small sheep. No sign of Jack. Loser.
