In october 2008, Phil Bristow of Tri-Logic Cornwall fame, (yes he's the Chairman - check out the 'People' page) will attempt to swim the Fal River, from Black Rock at the Falmouth harbour entrance to Lemon Quay, Truro. The total distance is around 9 miles - or the equivalent of 576 lengths of a 25m pool!
He is undertaking this crazy task to raise money for two charities:
WaterAid is an international charity whose mission is to overcome poverty by enabling the world's poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.
Surfers Against Sewagecampaign for clean, safe recreational waters, free from sewage effluents, toxic chemicals and nuclear waste.
“I chose both charities to keep the water theme going, keep money in Cornwall and send some to countries not as lucky as us. But more importantly because of the good work they do. We are lucky enough in the UK and particularly in Cornwall to have plenty of clean water for consumption and leisure, which I would imagine sometimes we take for granted.
With the money raised from this swim and the continued efforts of both WaterAid and SAS countries not as fortunate as ourselves will be provided with safe, drinkable water and we can continue to enjoy what we have come to expect as the norm, usable, clean water free from parasite's and bugs.”
