First Timers Gear Guide

Triathlon needn't cost a fortune - although admittedly as you get into it you'll want all the latest stuff.

For your first triathlon, its pointless forking out for loads of new stuff if you're not sure whether you will like the sport or not.

Racing Essentials

Clothing - Rather than buying a trisuit you can just use your normal swimwear, with a t-shirt (and shorts if you're of a more modest nature) over the top for the bike and run.

Goggles  - Any will do as long as they dont leak!

Wetsuit - Essential for open-water swims.  You need not buy one - your local triathlon retailer will usually hire them for one race or for a season.

Bike - Your choices here are basically:

1) Use any bike that you already own, preferably a road bike.  Mountain bikes are fine however, but try to get some slick tyres put on in place of the chunky ones.  The advantage is that you know the bike is the right size at no expense.

2) Borrow one - but don't borrow one from your mate who is very much taller (or sharter) than you or you'll be seriously uncomfortable on the bike leg.

3) Buy one - an entry level bike will be fine until your performance improves

Whatever option you go for, just make sure the bike is roadworthy.

Bike Helmet  - Generally speaking you need one with the CE mark, but its worth checking your race instructions for any other standard required.

Water bottle  - For your bike leg as you will need to hydrate.

Running Shoes - You probably already have some but if they are very old and/or worn it may be worth getting a new pair.  Its definitely worth going to a specialist run shop to get the advice and knowledge of the staff - most now also have biomechanical analysis so you know you're getting the right pair for your feet and running style.

Racing Non-Essentials

Swim Cap - great if you've got long hair. Open water triathlons provide these for safety reasons, but you might like one for training in.

Bike Glasses - the ones with interchangeable lenses are good for all conditions

Sunglasses/cap - for running comfort

Socks - for the bike & run legs
