Race Reviews 2007

IRONMAN 2008

On Sunday, 7th September, 2008, five of our members will be attempting the gruelling 140.6 km course.  Jan, Tony and Denise will be attempting the event for the first time, and Sue and Steve are returning for their second year.  Here's wishing them all a successful and safe race, especially Jan and Sue who have both been dogged by injuries.  A full race report will follow as soon as one of them has regained enough energy after the event to write one!

Portreath Tide Race, Sunday 31st August

No rain, about 15 teams, loads of spades and buckets of masses of energy showed up at Portreath beach on Sunday afternoon for another exciting tide race.  The Tri-Logic team consisted of Ceri, Barrie, Denise, Phil, Angie, Steve (former member visiting from Oz) plus some 'honorary members' including Juliet Knowles and daughter. On Tony's recommendation, we decided on a long, thin sandcastle, with wider base at the back so that we could all move back as necessary.  The building went well, no slacking from anyone, and Barrie really came into his own, never seen a shovel move so fast!

When the time came to get on, our mound held up well, and we had a chance to look at the competition.  Most had gone for the standard roundish mound with some adding a wall in front.  Ours was the only long narrow design - had we got it wrong?  The waves quickly took their toll on most of the competition, and we were still standing- just! we could feel a movements beneath our feet and we all clung together for dear life.  We finally collapsed at the back, and there were only two teams left who both collapsed seconds later.  So third place overall, but alas! no prize grrrr!  Next year.....

Mammoth Swim, Monday 4th August

Tony had a bright idea to get his Ironman swim training underway by a long swim from Carbis bay to St.Ives and back again.  A few hardy souls congregated on the slipway, wondering how far we'd get:  Jan (back in training although still not at full strength with her ankle), Dave, Nathan, Phil, Ange and of course Tony.  Steve Coram (from Cycle Logic fame) decided to accompany the swimmers on his paddle board.

Conditions were good, nice and sheltered, with little or no wind chop.  The only problem going out was it seemed to take forever to round the point.  By the time I eventually reached the harbour wall at St Ives,  Nathan had already been out and had a cup of tea and back again.  After a celebratory dive off the wall, we started to head back.

I had Nathan and Phil in my sights for a while, with Dave over to my right going in closer to the rocks than I dared.  Concentrating on my stroke I soon stopped looking for the others, and concentrated on getting round the point, which seemd to take forever.  Once round I had a bit of a surprise in the shaoe of a large light brown jellyfish swimming right for me.  I tried to stay calm while it passed underneath me, thankfully harlessly.  Then I had the horrible thought 'what if ther'es a whole school of them and I'm about to swim into them?!'.

I made it shore after what seemed an age, only to find out that Nathan had been stung over his eye on one of the blighters.  Apparently, urine neutralises the sting, but sorry to say no-one obliged.  A few minutes later Tony and Jan arrived, having got caught in a bit of a rip around the point.

Dave's quick reckoning on distance was about 2.5 miles as the crow flies, although I must admit it seemed further.  VWe were all a bit shivery afterwards, but all in all, a good training session.  When's the next one????

Sunday Ride 29th June 2008

The Lizard

Seven riders met at the usual RV eagerly anticipating the arrival of someone who might have a clue about suitable routes to the Lizard. Unfortunately 9am came and went, 9.05 and even 9.10 before we decided we were on our own and it was time to stop putting off the inevitable.

So off we trundled with anticipation in our stride as we headed towards Helston via the sleepy hamlet of Leedstown. With the wind in our hair we cruised past Culdrose and on to the many villages of the northerly edge of the Lizard peninsular. Now in the capable hands of Dave we found all the hills there were to have on the peninsular and not a moan was heard about the fact. Swinging past the big dishes we sailed into the Lizard.

Time for tea and stickies and a spot of sun bathing before it was time to head off home. Heading easterly we breezed along with the tail wind dropping off the Helstonites en route. From there the last five bid a fond farewell to one another as the group was split with Angie and Phil heading to Praze and Alex, Mike and Andy sprinting off to Hayle. A Lizard and cakes, what a day out.

Triathlon Taster Day, Friday June 6th

A great turn-out on Friday; fifteen newbies took up the triathlon challenge at the long-awaited Taster Day.   The event kicked off with a brief from Steve, followed by swim workshop in the pool.  Ceri, nathan and Jeff all did a great job delivering their session, which was specially-designed to introduce beginners to drills and pool equipment such as pull buoys.  Stroke analysis was also carried out, and everyone took away  a few tips to improve their front crawl.

A bike turbo session followed for half the field, while the rest took the apportunity to have gait analysis by Kay from At Your Pace or chat to the club members and nutritionist Daniel Martin.  The bike sessions were set up and run by Tony, and Steve Coram from Cycle Logic was on hand to sort any technical bike issues.  A quick swap over made sure that everyone had the opportunity to benefit from the bike session.  Then it was over to Barrie, a level 2 run coach, who led a 20-minute speed session on the track.

After Phil's debrief, we had some fantastic feed back from the attendees, and then true to type, many of us retired to the pub.  All in all, a great event that could not have been so successful had it not been the effort put in by all those involved - a big thank you to everyone!

Bank Holiday Dip

A few idiots, er, dedicated triathletes flung themselves into the icy waters off Marazion in lieu of the traditional Tri-Logic Good Friday Swim 2008 - The Swim That Never Was.  The first few minutes were the worst, but after a few expletives, everyone managed to settle into a stroke of sorts.

March Gossip - Its bad news for Tony's

paperwork...

Things are definitely hotting up - no, not the weather unforunately, but in the plans that are afoot to expand the club and add more structure to training.

Friday has been put forward as the club training night, this seems to suit most people (Sorry Tony, you'll have to do your paperwork some other time!).  We will start these in a week or two - keep an eye on the What's On page - and will be alternating coached swim session, coached run session, or a foray out on bikes.  These will probably based from Helston or Carn Brea leisure centres for convenience sake.

Other ideas are to have a 'taster day' for prospective new members, this will hopefully entail a half hour swim coaching session followed by a short run. A date has not yet been set aside for this - watch this space.

We've had some ideas flowing for other activities, e.g. a simple bike mainenance workshop for those of us that are less than useful with  tyre lever, and maybe a nutrition talk from Jan (if we ask her nicely).

Good Friday Swim 2008

Not much of a swim in the end, although Jan and Andy turned up ready to brave the surf in their wetsuits and face masks - nutters!   After a quick consensus, everyone repaired to The Bassett Arms for warmth and beer.  Phew! Another hard training session achieved!
